Sewing Sage's Burial Clothing

March 22 and 23, 2009
The day Sage returned to the Father Crystal asked me if I would sew his burial clothes. I had already been thinking about it but was afraid I wouldn't be able to do it. I have sewn wedding gowns and blessing dresses for my daughter's but not this. The kids decided it would be too hard on me and we should purchase the clothing. But as I thought about this decision I knew I would live to regret it. After some prayer I called my close friend, Sharron Huish, in Tucson and asked her if she would come stay with me and help me sew them. She agreed without hesitation and told me she was honored I had asked.
The first day was difficult. Needles broke and bent. My conventional machine broke and Sharrons new serger wouldn't serge. I couldn't figure out how snap tape went together and I couldn't tell the zipper foot from all the others. I have been sewing for nearly 39 years and I couldn't remember anything and when I was sewing I couldn't see through the tears. The clothing needed to be at the mortuary by 1:30 on Monday the 23rd.
The next morning Crystal, Sharron and I knelt in prayer beside our sewing table. Sharron offered the most beautiful prayer and as she prayed I felt strength, comfort and clarity fill me.
We were finally able to finish his clothing with no further glitches. When we finished I was so thankful we had sewn them. It was an honor to do this last act of service for my grandson. It was a different feeling than when I crocheted his blessing blanket that's for sure. Very bitter sweet but I felt he was beside me all the way encouraging and lifting up his grandma in her time of need.
Sharron had also made a light weight white satin blanket. The edges were stitched with leaves. They reminded me of his name. All of it was perfect.
Sages clothing was made from scraps of satin that were used to make his big sister Jayden's blessing dress and his cousin Payten's blessing dress.  The interfacing inside the neck and lining was made from the white tie his daddy wore in the temple on his parents wedding day.  The collar was cut from the back of his mommy's wedding gown.  The trim is white with just a touch of Sage green leaves.  The ribbon tie on his cap was from his sister's blessing dress.  Every square inch of his clothing was made with love and had meaning behind it.
I'm so thankful for Sharron and the friendship we have been blessed with.  She is a true friend... a sister in Christ and has always been there for me.

His burial suit was just perfect. I can't believe the way everything came together. Mom and Sharron did such a wonderful job, and were truly inspired.

What a beautiful gift. Sage's body will always be surrounded by pieces of his family's past, and his spirit is surrounded by his family's future. My heart breaks for your loss, but Heavenly Father will lead you through the fire. God Bless your family.

I do not know if I will ever be able to explain how much this has meant to me. I thought he looked adorable and so peaceful. I am so grateful you 2 made his suit, hat, and blanket. Words will never be enough. I can never say enough.

Thank you and I love you very much.

I followed a link from Kayleigh Ann Freeman's site to your daughters site - and then to your site - and as a grandmother of a 4 month old little boy whom I adore - I cannot imagine your pain right now - and you and your family are in my daily prayers! I am amazed that you were able to sew the outfit that you did - but understand 100% the need to do this for him - and I'm sure you will be grateful for the effort forever - your strength in being able to do that amazes me - and I just wanted to tell you!!

What meaningful items to use in his burial clothing. While it was difficult I am glad that you were able to do it, as I know it will mean so much as time goes by.

I love the way you express yourself Liz. I have had so many feelings since spending those two days with your family. I have been so humbled by the sweet, simple faith that all of you have. It has helped and made it harder for me to focus on what is really important in life. First I can focus on things really well and then daily life intrudes and makes my vision blur. then of course guilt sets in that I can be sidetracked so easily.

Thank you for your wonderful faithful friendship and sisterly love that has been a constant in my life for so long.

It was truly a honor and privilege to sew and serve with you. Thank you again.
